Job Coach

Reporting to Careers Lead

Permanent Role

Part time (3-4 days) or full time position

40 week (term time) or 52 week contract available

Remote working (1 day) will be considered

Salary: £28,500 - £30,500

Roots and Shoots is an independent, award-winning educational and environmental charity based in Kennington, South London. From a derelict site in 1982, it has grown to become a well-established and respected vocational training organisation with biodiverse wildlife gardens, offering a safe haven for both people and nature to flourish.

Roots and Shoots has a proud history of offering inclusive training and support for local people in need since 1982. Our students have many positive outcomes, often going on to paid work, higher level courses, supported training and volunteering. 

Being familiar with working via the Google Workspace suite of productivity tools (Gmail, Google Sheets, Google Docs etc.) is beneficial but not essential.

The Roots and Shoots team includes management and office staff, careers team, catering team, cleaning staff, environmental education and horticulture staff, learning support assistants, site managers, subject tutors and, SI and school links tutors, trustees and dedicated volunteers who all work together to make Roots and Shoots the unique and dynamic place it is.

Job Description - Job Coach

Roots and Shoots is a specialist training provider for young people with barriers to learning and work. This is a student facing role and all staff must place individual learning at the centre of teaching, assessment and progress.

The role of Job Coach is within our Careers Team and provides hands-on support for the student cohort. You will be working with the Careers Lead as well as the wider teaching team. You will be supporting the team to meet the requirements of The Matrix Standard.

Core Role:

  • Helping Students and Interns achieve their personal and professional goals. This might be improved life and work skills, independence or employment. 

  • Bringing a positive and dynamic attitude to the Careers Team. This is a challenging role with real rewards supporting disadvantaged young people.

  • Leading weekly Job Coaching sessions for 16-24 year olds with an Education, Health and Care Plan, including mild to moderate learning difficulties and disabilities and/or Autism.

  • Matching students with onsite and offsite work placements, providing student and employer support to maximise the learning from every opportunity. 

  • To work alongside the Careers Lead and wider team to organise, monitor and track all areas of work related learning. This includes adhering to health and safety and target based outcomes. 

  • Tracking work placement paperwork to ensure Health and safety, attendance and progress are monitored. 

  • Supporting the development of our employer database. 

Tasks Include:

  • To monitor and support the progress of a student caseload

  • To maintain good communication with employers 

  • To complete progress reviews (yearly EHCP and termly Reviews)

  • To support Careers Team goals of employer engagement

  • To organise external professional training for students

  • To provide hands on Job Coaching for young people in work

  • To attend staff meetings and work in a collaborative way

Skills and Experience:

Essential:

  • 3+ years experience of working with young people with SEN within a school, college or alternative provision setting

  • 2+ years experience of providing training for young people with SEN

  • 1+ years experience of working towards monitored outcomes

  • Excellent written and spoken English 

  • The ability to motivate and encourage young people 

  • Excellent relationship building skills 

  • A methodical approach to work 

  • Accurate report writing and record keeping skills

Desireable:

  • A recognised IAG qualification

Learning Support Assistant (LSA)

Reporting to Education Manager and Operations Manager

Permanent role, must be on site, no option to work from home.

Pay: £16.80 per hour (term time only - 40 weeks per year)

Hours: Flexible - 2 to 3 days per week, 09:00 - 16:00 with option of flexibility if providing lunchtime cover.

We are looking for someone to support our tutors with a combination of practical and classroom-based activities. This is an active, hands-on role where you will be helping SEN students with various subjects including: Horticulture, Functional Skills, Employability, Hospitality and more.

Job Description - Learning Support Assistant for young people with Autism and SEN

Roots and Shoots is a specialist training provider for young people with barriers to learning and work. This is a student facing role on and offsite. 

Learning Support Assistants make up the core team involved in delivering high quality support and learning. This role has been allocated due to a student’s higher needs, normally communication and/or health reasons.

Everyday tasks include: 

  • To work alongside Tutors with an understanding of student needs, targets, progress and ongoing activities

  • To support the learning of the student. This may be hands off by allowing the student the freedom to try activities with the possibility of making mistakes. At other times you may become more involved by:

  • Repeating instructions given by tutor

  • Providing feedback on student’s progress

  • Modelling how to do something

  • Verbal or non-verbal encouragement

  • Verbal or non-verbal praise 

  • To monitor and support the overall progress and development of students and relay this back to Tutors

  • To facilitate and encourage a learning experience which provides students with the opportunity to achieve their individual potential.
