City & Guilds Level 1 Certificate in Preparing for Employment
This course is designed to progress students through Level One.2 or employment. It is an active course that incorporates the views of the student and encourages them to think and make choices on some important themes. The areas covered are as follows:
- - Planning for progression (this sets the scene and gets the student involved in the course from the start)
- - Exploring careers (this looks at what areas of work the student is interested in and then goes on to look at the mechanics of how to apply for work etc.)
- - Developing skills in the workplace (this unit looks at health and safety, communication and team working)
- - Understanding citizenship (this looks at rights and responsibilities, making social choices and becoming an active citizen).
- - Independent living (goes into a broad range of independent living skills, from money to home management)
This is a very useful and interesting course which helps the smooth transition into work and becoming a social responsible active citizen.
City & Guilds Wordwise and Numberwise
These classroom based qualifications are delivered by our Education Co-ordinator. They can be delivered at one of 3 levels for the student: Entry 1, 2 or 3. Both written and verbal English and Maths skills are developed with a portfolio being built throughout the course. Every effort is made to ensure that the learning is of practical use to the student, thereby developing their life skills.
Computer training with Lambeth Riverside
Roots and Shoots has been working for some time with Lambeth Riverside to deliver computer training courses; the courses on offer to students have included BBC Webwise and CLAIT.
Lifestyle Awareness Training with Icon Training and Elephant & Castle Gym
Over the last few years we have been able to offer a very interesting gym-based course, which looks at exercise, food and other lifestyle choices. This has been very popular with students and can act as a feeder course into the YMCA qualification.
