FAQs

Here are answers to some of the questions we get asked the most. To find out more, you can contact us directly

Where are you?
We are in Kennington (North Lambeth), just off Kennington Road. Our full address is: Walnut Tree Walk, Lambeth, SE11 6DN (59, 159, 3, 344 buses all stop close by).

Who is eligible?
Candidates must be 16 – 18 and up to 25 with a Statement of Educational Need (SEN). There are no minimum entry requirements and students must be Entry Level to
Level 1. Students can reside in any London borough. Places are free and all students receive free travel.

How long is the course?
Students are entitled to 40 weeks training (which is one full academic year). Most of the students start in September/October and complete the course in July the following year. However, we offer a “roll on roll off” programme and students can enroll at any time during the academic year (depending on availability of places). The courses do not run in August.

What courses can students study?
We offer Foundation Learning (three strands of learning; Personal, Functional, and Vocational) with City & Guild accredited courses:
Employability & Personal Development (including professional work experience programme)
Retail and Customer Skills (onsite shop and offsite training)
Practical Gardening (onsite garden, local allotment, links with Lambeth Parks)
National Arts Award (working with Sparkworks Arts)
Maths, English and ICT sessions (ALL sessions are in small groups 4-8 maximum)

Where do students go afterwards?
Students move on to further education, training and/or employment. We have an excellent track record and our moving on rates range from 62% – 82% (60% is the average). Last year 75% of our students completed the course and have started FE or employment. We support leaving students and often maintain contact for several years.

In summary
We offer an intensely supported programme in a friendly environment that aims to engage students who have found mainstream provision inadequate. For more information or to make a referral contact Matt Brownlee on 020 7195 0237 or employmentofficer@rootsandshoots.org.uk
