Introduction

Reach your full potential with the Roots and Shoots learning, training and employment experience

• Every trainee who attends Roots and Shoots can expect a programme tailored to their individual learning needs and employment goals. We’ve listed below the qualifications that a student can hope to achieve – these work with each other, with the Foundation Learning Programme.

Within the Vocational strand at Roots and Shoots we deliver Retail Skills and Horticulture Skills. Within the Personal, Social Development (PSD) strand we deliver Employability and Personal Development all available at Award, Certificate or Diploma level.

Functional Skills is available from Entry to Level 1. All qualifications are City&Guilds ensuring high quality and recognition by employers and colleges. As a trainee at Roots and Shoots you can also achieve the Bronze or Silver Arts’ Award.

There is First Aid, Fire Awareness accredited training and lots of other shorter courses along the way. Trainees can also attend Fusion Fitness centre and use the gym each week. The whole package, together with relevant work experience, means that a trainee could leave Roots and Shoots with 5-6 relevant qualifications, and a much stronger chance of gaining work or going on to further training.

Assessment

Each applicant is assessed by the Educational Co-ordinator and Initial Assessments taken to plan your course with you. Every trainee’s course is slightly different – every young person is different!

We plan with you  and we look at your aims, your interests and needs. You may not have any idea what you’d like to do and that’s OK, as there are lots of things you can try while on the scheme. We support you and help you keep on track so you can achieve as much as possible. We also care about you as a young person!

Reviews

All trainees belong to a Tutor Group and have their own Personal Tutor. You have a review with your tutor every month to see how you are doing and if there are any problems. You can drop in and have a chat with your tutor if necessary and help or advice is always available!

Student support

We encourage parents and carers to get to know us so there is all round support and if necessary we can work with or refer a trainee to another agency. Counselling advice can also be arranged if needed. We feel that the level of support offered to student is very high, and as a result, unlike the national average drop out rate of 50% we achieve a much lower 15%.

Travel costs

Roots and Shoots will cover the cost of travel for students; this is normally a monthly bus pass issued on an Oyster Card.
