Apple Day October 2007 Press release
Catch the first juice of this year’s apple harvest and get right to the core of what makes a good apple at Roots and Shoots Apple Day on Sunday 14 October. Toast the charity’s 25th anniversary with 2007 apple juice nouveau à la Lambeth, which will be available to taste and buy. Check out more than 50 varieties of apples from The Brogdale Trust in Kent, which will be auctioned off at the end of the day.
Plants, grown by Roots and Shoots’ horticultural trainees, and honey from the hives in the beautiful half acre wildlife garden, as well as from some more exotic parts of the world, will also be on sale.
Lovers of fresh delicious food will be spoiled for choice at the Producers’ Market, now a popular feature of Roots and Shoots’ Open Days. There will be children’s activities throughout the day from apple bobbing and peeling to story telling in the Dragon’s Den. The Lions Part Theatre will return to make corn dollies and start to get the giant Corn Queen ready for their own October Plenty event on October 28th.
Roots and Shoots provides vocational training for young people from the inner city, mainly from the boroughs of Lambeth and Southwark, providing them with the skills and self confidence to equip them for work.
HRH The Prince of Wales officially opened the splendid new eco-centre in June this year. As well as being the trainees’ learning centre, it’s also the focus of Lambeth life, available for community activities and for hire to local organisations. Each year more than 2000 schoolchildren visit the wildlife garden, which is also the home of the London Beekeepers Association, and the venue for its beekeeping courses.
ADMISSION: £1 for adults; 50p for children. Refreshments will be available.
